I still want one. There's something interesting about those over-engineered door handles that are exclusive to the coupe that makes me think that most other parts of the car are just that much better than the sedan (and I want one of those as well...)

oh yeah! I have had the sedan in long and short wheelbase flavors, and with diesel and gas. They are so incredibly rugged, except for the transmissions (which still last a good long time). Too many have seen first car/beater car duty though

I tend to spend extra time looking at the ones at the junkyard, digging through the years of receipts and imagining the life they led at one time. Somewhat sad to see these once-proud beasts waste away, but I guess it's all part of the circle of life. One of these days I'll get around to posting some of the junkyard pix.

oh yes, please do. I hate to see them there, and rarely have I seen one that couldnt have lived on as someones jalopy. Even the tranny fixes arent that hard or time consuming on them. Rescue as many as you can!!!

There was one, I forget the model but it was the top-of-the-line before the 1st S-class (late '60s/early '70s, probably a W108), that seemed to be in nice shape. The body and interior seemed good, right down to a nice engraved plaque on the dash with the owner's name. And then I saw it as I pulled open the door fully open - rot completely through the chassis rail - no chance of bringing that back from the dead. Hopefully a lot of the parts can live on in other vehicles, but I don't have a lot of hope of finding many other surviving 45 year old MBs here in the midwest that could use these parts.

One of the others I spotted was a Mk III Jetta VR6 with lots of rear body damage. Even though I have no current need, I wanted to yank that engine and keep it around in my basement, waiting for the appropriate donor vehicle. A complete VR6 engine for about $160? Made me want to search for Corrado G60s to upgrade.

And then there was something that I didn't even know existed. An Accord wagon with a manual transmission. I thought they were all autos, but this one said otherwise. I grabbed the shift knob to use on my Mazda5.

oh yeah I have seen the manual Accord wagons. Usually the ex trim. VR6 for 160? Shoot that is worth it all day even if the chain guides need to be done. I had a 98 GLX jetta with a 5 speed and it was a hoot! Everything else broke on it before 50K miles, but such is the way of Mk3's.

Too bad on that old SE though, I had a few, luckily just rust in the battery tray on both of them for me though. They can get ugly. I totally want to see pics of your adventures now!
